Nova and Storm concept sketches

keirajo

I don't often share my concept sketches or the way I do them, but given my difficulty in drawing robots anyways................sometimes my concept pages look better than finished works. I did use my light box to trace these into my sketchbook this morning to make a few alterations (not happy with Nova's upper arms, I also want to make the claw-shield gauntlets on his forearms look better) and eventually finish.

But I often do concept sketching in ballpoint pen, with copious notes everywhere--in fact, after taking this photo last night, I filled like all the remaining whitespace on Novablaze's adult design sketches (far right) with notes about his two alt modes (space jet and wolf)--given I posted that colored ref of his younger forms several days ago, this sketch shows how his form looks more adult and his beast mode had more display on his frame, especially his boots (which end in claws). He also looks a lot more like Galvatron here--and that was fully intended. XD

Stormbreaker controls the other two pages, the center being her baby form and she's a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY long way from having any kind of growth towards any youth/teen/adult forms, since she's a newborn in the current stories--but you can see how most of her form resembles Hot Rod's. Her birth was also a major plot point for several reasons, but she's NOT
as important to the future of this series as Nova is. But her frame, as an adult, is meant to be a standard-ish aerial frame.............she is a completely normal (wheras Nova is "abnormal" or super-special) Transformer. The way her wings are can be folded or extended, so you can see how it very much resembles Hot Rod's yellow spoiler fins. Her helm is supposed to be quite reminiscent of IDW comics' version of Rodimus.

But I do concept sketches in ballpoint pen and often they look better than my finished work, even if a bit messy.............so, I thought I'd share a little bit of my "never shown" work with you guys. :)

Transformers belongs to Hasbro. OCs are mine. :)

I understand that; in highschool I just liked doing the HB drawings with all the guidelines still showing since I didn't like erasers. "Finished" always felt like things were going to have to be serious.

Yeah.......I kinda feel like that sometimes. I have old stuff that’s so good in ballpoint but if I’d trace it for finished stuff, it never looked as great. I do like my little lightbox though, it’s one of the best things I ever purchased. :D

I was the high school kid who drew all over my school notebook and folder covers......so I think that’s how I started with doing things in ballpoint, too. :)
