let's draw a simple sky: dawn

keirajo

I have not yet gotten around to coloring any of my lingering artworks in my folders, so...........besides "Lemonade", I don't have new art to post this week. I thought I'd do a tiny "how to" of how a do a digitally simple sky background. Anyone can do it really! :D

Dawn Sky: a dawn-colored sky can be rose colors or more pinks, or even very soft oranges. Usually dawn and sunset (twilight) may look similar, but it might be nice to differentiate it with "I'll draw dawns with reds" and "I'll draw twilight with purples" if you feel like it. Dawn skies may also still have a few stars that you are able to see, as well.

1--choose the color you want and look for the hues of that color. Make the swaths across the background of the sky like shown here.

2--using the "blend" tool in whatever program you have, softly blend out the lines between the hues of the colors so that your sky seems to naturally go from lighter on the horizon to darker at the top of the page.

3--on a separate layer, use your spraycan tool. I work in Manga Studio (CLIP), so there are 4 different sprays to use. I use "soft" for clouds. You can use a white or off-white for clouds and then you can use any color you really like for the shadowing on the clouds. Clouds in the morning may seem smaller, wispier, than daytime clouds...so I make them smaller and not as puffy.

4--to soften the edges of clouds I use a blending tool called "blur", but if you have a similar blending tool to soften edges, you can use that as well. I also go over the shadows with the "blur" tool, to soften the shadow. As you can see here, I used another spraycan brush called "droplet"...to splatter a few stars in the sky. Stars will probably be more visible the darker the sky is, and less visible the lighter the sky is...so fewer stars near the horizon. You can also blend out/fade stars using the "blur" tool, to make stars seem less visible.

      You're very welcome! :D

These can all be done on one or two layers, max. :)
