1. The design must be visually striking. It should be recallable so a person may recognise it after seeing it just once.
2. The design must be unique and unambiguous. It may not represent an existing object, or use an existing symbol.
3. The design must be easy to stencil with a compass and straight edge.
4. The design must be rotationally symmetrical to be identifiable from any orientation.
5. The design must be acceptable to all backgrounds.
