Bendith y Mamau by Karla-Chan (critique requested)

Bendith y Mamau (critique requested)

Karla-Chan

I want to do a series of mythological creatures from the British Isles, inspired by Cheesedemon88's Nordic creatures of myth. I am going to try and cover from all parts of the British Isle's and not just the ones from England. Although the ones from England do have a some Nordic influences.

Bendith y Mamau are a rather unpleasant clan of Welsh fairies. Their name means 'the mothers blessing' however calling fairies by this flattering title, was meant to appease them. Appearance wise these fairies are described as small and ugly, and sometimes regarded as the result of interbreeding between goblins and fairies.

Traditionally belonging to the Unseelie Court of Carmarthenshire.

The Bendith Y Mamau are most famous for stealing small children, and replacing them with their own changelings; known as Crimbils. One theory was that, they needed to improve their stock with mortal blood, others say it is due to jealously because of the beauty of the child.

Unlike most other types of fairies they don't just steal babies, but can steal children when they can walk and talk. Mothers had to take precautions not to leave their babies unattended in fairy country.

There were various methods of retrieving mortal children from the clutches of the Bendith Y Mamau. Like the ntervention of a witch, the parents can regain the stolen child, who will remember nothing of its time with the Bendith Y Mamau except for a vague recollection of sweet music. Although it was said that some of these methods for retrieving the child, were barbaric to the poor child suspected of being a Crimbil.

That is really great to hear actually. I am working on my 2nd piece now. It has taken a little longer since there are two of the creature in the picture so over all it has more detail. So I am hoping I can get that finished up either tomorrow or Friday!

I would love to make this into a series, since I love hearing about this stuff myself. My friend is doing a Nordic set so she inspired me to do this. So in a way we are both sharing our cultures with each other, and people who wish to see them. I think it is all pretty exciting and I really hope I can keep it up as a good project!

I am well on the way with the 2nd one though.
