Cargo by Kah

Cargo

Kah

Most adventurers shudder at the mention of mimics - those dreadful monstrosities possessed of such intelligence and malice that they pose as treasure or furniture to lay in wait for foolish dungeon delvers, setting upon them and devouring those foolish enough to be lured by their canny ploys.

But like all creatures, even mimics can have a heart. Cargo was found in the form of a cowering coinpurse as a young mimic after kin were slain by a group of adventurers, but not before decimating their numbers, leaving only a single warrior left standing. The warrior took pity on the pitiful little runt of the litter, adopting him and raising him as his own.

Though he cannot remember his adoptive father's name, Cargo is filled with warm memories nestled up against him at the campfire, listening with rapt fascination to the old adventurer's stories as he fed him little scraps of meat that'd been roasted over the fire. Over the years he grew bigger and bigger, at one point eating the adventurer's bag of holding and finding it merging with his anatomy. The old warrior simply laughed it off and asked how it tasted.

One day the adventurer was visited by an old priestess, and looked really sad. He told Cargo to stay behind and find another adventurer to travel with, before disappearing into the night. Cargo traded hands a few times after that, but after a few bad experiences, grew too scared to reveal himself to his owners.

Eventually he came into the possession of the adventure-obsessed Vortex Dragon, Noggle, and after a repetitious cycle of them both spooking one another, they became fast friends. The dragon even managed to translate the little mimic's gibbering into accounts of his master's exploits. Now the excited little Pack Mimic is eager to become an adventurer himself, even if his biggest contribution to the party is to hold their stuff and occasionally thwap people with his pseudopods. His travels with the wayfarers have shown him countless sights and sounds that he eagerly reports back to Noggle at the end of each mission, hoping that one day he may find the dungeon his master disappeared into so many years ago.
