Bunny Link's Awakening Sprite Edit by Joat

Bunny Link's Awakening Sprite Edit

Joat

I do not normally do sprite work, edits or otherwise, but I felt inspired, by Ryusuta's Bunny Link to the Past mod, to create this. More specifically, I was wondering if there was any way, if she does decide to create a sequel mod in the form of Bunny Link's Awakening, to potentially help lighten some of the workload. Back then, I decided the most likely way I could help would be to volunteer to assist with sprite art and, despite no such mod being announced or even stated to be considered by Ryusuta, well... I became so curious about whether or not I actually could produce such sprite art that I decided to do a bit of a test run.

It is interesting for me to look back at this now. Back when I first posted it on FA, I would never have suspected that I would pretty much become the group leader on the project, doing all of the dialogue changes and almost all of the sprite work, with dr_doc_md contributing a few sprites and all the photo/cutscene graphics and Ryusuta mainly just giving her thoughts on a few things here and there.

In any case, at first, for this, I considered frankenspriting, using the existing rabbit NPC sprites. However, I quickly figured out that the bunny head graphics really do not fit well with Link's body. So, I needed to do things more the old-fashioned way, though the rabbit sprite was a useful reference for how to make the ears, at least, even if I did need to make the ears smaller so they would fit.

These sprites are obeying the limitations that the mod needs to work under. Including transparent, Gameboy Color sprites are limited to four colors. I considered changing the fur color to pink, to better match Bunny Link to the Past, but I realized that, depending on how the game is programmed, other things may share Link's palette entry, so I decided to go ahead and leave it unchanged, to be safe. My fears were confirmed when I did eventually start trying to modify Link's palette. Additionally, Link is limited to 16x16 size, so I had to work hard to make sure I fit within those bounds. Though I only thought of that, of course, AFTER I had a finished sample of 19-pixel-tall sprites (gotta have room for those adorable ears!). The size limitation turned out to be the most painful one, really.

Anyway, as for the credits, the base sprites were, of course, designed by Nintendo, and the sprite sheet itself that I used as a base at the time was provided by "Bruce Juice."
