Lizard (Dreaming, Perception)
Lizard slinks through the undergrowth. Lizards are the largest and most widespread group of reptiles today. Most have slim bodies and large heads. This has given rise to the belief that they have the power of dreaming. Lizards are generally swift and agile. Many have special feet and toes to help them move. As a lizard grows it will shed off its old skin revealing new, more often more vibrant looking, scales. Baby lizards will usually hatch from eggs; though a few species do give birth to live young. Mainly predators, a lizard’s diet consists mostly of insects and other small animals. Lizards have excellent vision, including colour vision, leading to them becoming linked with perception. Lizards rely heavily on body language, postures, and specific movements to court mates, differentiate territory and resolve disputes. The tail of a lizard can serve many functions; acting as extra fat storage, shaped similarly to the head to confuse enemies, or even having the ability to detach and regrow in order to escape capture.

In Roman mythology lizard was thought of as sleeping through the winter, thereby symbolizing death and resurrection. Egyptians saw lizards as good fortune and in hieroglyphs the lizard is used to depict “plentiful”. On the pacific islands lizards are revered as ‘heaven gods’. In Native American folklore the role of lizard was seen as generally positive, associated with healing and masculinity. Many Native American tribes associated lizards with the dreamtime. In Hinduism lizards are a lucky omen and their chirping is considered holy and auspicious.

When lizard slinks into a reading it can be a good time to examine your dreams. Are you shedding your tail to save your skin? How are you perceiving the world around you? What have your dreams been telling you? Lizard is most connected to the sun card, but a look at the biome of rainforest may prove helpful.
