Cat (Independence, Mystery)
Cat pounces on its prey. Cats can have an unpredictable and mercurial nature. With quick relaxes, retractable claws, and sharp teeth, cats are easily able to catch their prey; many of which are vermin species. Like most predatory species, cats have an excellent sense of hearing, as well as a strong sense of smell. Though solitary hunters, cats have complex social lives using vocalizations and body language to communicate. Seen as independent, it was mostly due to their independence from humans that sparked this link, as cats can live in large groups and come together frequently to mate. Cats have large eyes containing many rods. This adaptation enhances light perception and enables cats to see in low light. To aid with navigation cats have whiskers all over their body; most notably on their head. These whiskers act as an almost extra-sensory organ, feeling vibrations and allowing a cat to know whether it can fit through a gap or barrier. Cats will often wait, seeming to be asleep before making a move, conserving energy until it’s needed. Although they show a tendency towards nocturnal behaviour cats can be active during all hours; though most seem to prefer twilight.

The curiosity of cat is legendary; though this trait is said to get cats into trouble. Because of their affinity for the dark cat has become associated with some of the qualities that humans associate with the night; making it a symbol of mystery. It was because of its quick reflexes that cat was thought to have nine lives. It may also have been believed that because of cat's ties to mystery and to the otherworld that cats were able to escape the otherworld if they did die. The expression 'a cat may look at a king' asserts that even a person of low status is deserving of rights. Ancient Egyptians worshipped cats. The goddess Bast was shown as having a cat’s head. In Scandinavian lore it was said that the goddess Freyja's chariot was pulled by cats. During certain times in medieval history cats were seen as evil and were killed off in high number. This lack of cats may have contributed to the spread of the black plague, carried by the fleas on rats. Cat's ability to deal with these vermin have come to represent a guardianship that cat has with humans; protecting us from the diseases that these creatures carry. The fluid nature with which cat moves often associates it with qualities of sensuality.

When cat has pounced into a reading it may be time to examine deeper mysteries. Are you pouncing on the right opportunities, at the right time? Is your independence being asserted or undermined? What has piqued your curiosity? Because of cat's link to the night the major arcana of the moon might prove interesting, as well. Cat’s aversion to water may be examined as a source of difficulty in dealing with emotions.

Astrology- (Celtic Jan 21- Feb 17) This Celtic sign is known as The Thinker and is linked to the plant of Rowan. Cat is quick minded, and packs a healthy dose of intellect. With a knack for seeing the underbelly of an issue Cat seems to have a 'sixth sense'. Cat is highly observant and will often see fresh perspectives. Being on the fringes Cat can seem aloof and is in danger of becoming a lazy 'fireside cat' if negativity sets in. Cat is highly creative and needs an artistic outlet to help share their unique vision.
