Sarafina was born in the Pridelands, a descendant of the third daughter of the First King. In cubhood, she was Prince Taka's best friend, and when Uru was busy they spent many hours together, particularly as Safura loved to watch cubs.

In adolescence, Uru approved of a betrothal between Sarafina and Prince Taka to settle the young male deeper into the Pride. After his mother's death, Sarafina was one of the few lionesses he would see. They had a deep relationship, but despite their trying, seemed unable to have cubs. After many seasons of trying, Taka produced Zira, Kosa, and Kula with two of the Kusini lionesses and Sarafina gave birth to Nala by a rogue male. Although Taka had agreed to the affairs, he couldn't help but resent Nala, going so far as to allow her to nearly die beside Simba.

After Scar's takeover of the Pride, he named Sarafina his queen. When Nala was old enough, they bore a cub, which Taka named Malik (king). Sarafina often called him Mheetu, a name which stuck to the little white cub. Sarafina doted on the cub as much as Scar. She also served loyally as his Queen, leading hunts and finding herself with unusual control over the hyena Clan.

Her death came at the paws of the hyena, weeks after the birth of her last litter of cubs, who made it look as if she had fallen from a tree and broken her neck in revenge for the murder of one of their own during Mufasa's reign.
