The Spellskite

Salutations! I am Kavash, planar researcher and explorer, and I am writing to you all in hopes of sharing my many findings across Dominia. Lately, I have found some interesting developments, in which I’ve recorded beings of unusual gluttony. Now, of course I enjoy myself a good meal as well, but the cases of such gluttonous nature have been on the increase as of late, across more than one plane, and I would like to get to the bottom of my recent rash of sightings. I hope these documents will be of interest to you, so we will start with a most dangerous and difficult to research case.

This expedition took me to a place incredibly hostile for mere viashino like me, none other than the compleated plane of New Phyrexia. I was incredibly lucky to stumble across some more helpful, as of yet uncorrupted locals, cowering in the Quiet Furnace. I, naturally, wanted to explore the plane for my research, and they were very adamantly against the idea, but after I exchanged some information about the world outside of the plane, they did eventually aid me in the form of a disguise made of dead Phyrexian material. Wear the foe’s form to best it, or so sayeth the bey. And thus I set out to sightsee the great and terrible work of the infamous Phyrexians!

I must admit it was very exciting to see them at work. Their body of knowledge, especially concerning the union of flesh and machine, far outpaces those I’ve seen on other planes. If only they were not so xenophobic! But I digress. My wanderings eventually took me to some ruins they had co-oped as a large laboratory. (Later research revealed this to once be called Lumengrid.) In the lower halls were many tunnels they were using to store experiments, and here I found a most peculiar specimen.

As far as I can tell, they had created a beast of metal and flesh whose purpose was to consume mana. Indeed, they were testing out its capacity for magical energy, it seems, because they were casting spells, and watching as these spells curved through the air to always land upon this creature, directly upon its gorged, glowing middle.

This beast is called a spellskite, and the one I had stumbled upon was a particularly massive specimen, not only in scale, but in width. It looked like it had many gangly legs at one point, suspending its stomach in the air, but I only saw fat, useless limbs clutching its engorged gut. Its body was also beyond bloated, but the real centerpiece was the orb of mana it called a middle. It was burgeoning with magic, seemingly stuffed to bursting, yet the continued to fill it with more. What were they planning to do with such an enormous mana battery? I shudder to think…

I watched as it lazily tried to move, to no avail. It’s incredible to think that such a beast was not even strong enough to carry itself. And this is only one example of such a gorged creature. I am sure this plane has more examples of such bloated beings, and I will have to one day explore further. For now, though, that was all I could examine of it before the ones casting the spells turned to face me, obviously realizing something was wrong with my presence. Sadly, I had no choice but to planeswalk away. But I continue my search! I will write to you again soon with further findings.

Welcome, everyone, to Magic: the Fattening, a new series where I hit the "Random Card" button on Scryfall, get a random creature, and nixx draws them fat as heck! First pick was a cool one. Spellskite! This critter's already got a gut, let's make it big~

Tune in next time, for when we pick another random creature to plump up! Where will Kavash travel to next, we will see~ Hope you all like Nixx's art and my story work. Nixx did a wonderful job rendering this, thanks again, my dragon friend! ❤
