Descendus Au Chantier (critique requested)

DeRiften

Welcome to today's SOTD! This song marks the end of the album, and also my first a cappella piece which I actually adored. It just feels magical hearing my voice in sync with their voices, like I belong with them for a song's time in order to give it life.

For the non-Quebecois speakers out there, this song is actually part of a folk tale where I come from. 30 jobless men go work as slaves in the mines for 60 days straight in literally hellish conditions just so they can very barely feed their families. They must follow their boss's every whims because they're expendables and have no value whatsoever, they often get hurt but they keep on going out of love for their wife and kids. After a while, they pray to the Devil that they'd sell their soul and youth so they could see their family for just one night. To their surprise, Satan appeared (this is where I stop singing to hum with the others because this part gives me the goosebumps).

Satan says he doesn't have time to waste with worthless trash who, once they're in deep shit would sell their soul to the devil. He used to do that, sure, until one autumn evening he was relighting his fireplace when the phone rang. It was the miners' boss who told him it wasn't good for business. The miners kept disappearing, he'd find them dead in the snow because they broke their pact with the devil. It cost him an arm and a leg in insurances. Then his voice softened and he said "What about we talk business?". Then Satan said since then, he owns most of the company's stocks. 66,6%, in fact! Now he doesn't do little pacts that get him a one-time reward. No no no, now he makes a shitload of cash by making them slave themselves away in the mines. He then tells them they should have read the last line of their contract, which says "As soon as you enter the company, your soul belongs to the owner which is me", before wishing them a good night and saying they'll meet again very soon.

Down in the mines.

Thirty men already damned.

Down to burn.

Down for eternity.
