i figure Marco ends up making a habit of humming Alex to sleep, which occasionally leaks into half-singing things he barely knows the words to when he gets a little overzealous.

Probably started since Alex has a weird relationship with sleep and a hard time knocking out. Marco would probably swear up and down anything he does is to ease that a little but, really, he’s just hyper-conscious of the time he gets with the people in his life (having a basically unchecked lifespan, next to his human-lifespan partners). Losing some of that time to sleep is more than a little painful. So he gets it half in his head that this’ll keep his partner up a little longer, anyway.
