Happy snap from my last big domestic holiday. July 2012, and The Ghan has stopped in Alice Springs.

The train stops for several hours at both Alice Springs and Katherine for fuel, water, etc. During this time they offer various tours, or you can simply head in to town for a bit.

Our vantage point is the Anzac Hill lookout, looking south-west towards the railway, around 90 minutes before sunset.
