I came up with the initial idea for this a few days back while listening to this

and then today I drew it in MS-PAINT while listening to Ambient/Drone music (specifically Oneohtrix Point Never's work)

The idea for having symbols/characters for faces came from Klaufir's work and his use of the X motif in some of his art (specifically "Kindle"). Plus he introduced me to Oneohtrix Point Never in the first place.
