I have been having fun on my walks with my dog as of late due to the resident hawk family on our neighboring street. They live in a giant cottonwood tree and it's a mother of three i believe. I haven't properly seen them all in one spot just yet, but the residents say they're at least 5.
Some of the people say they're Red Tailed hawks, but i've ID'd the female as a Swainson's hawk, whom I named "Rough Neck". I'm not too familiar with these birds social habits, so I don't know if the male sticks around and helps as well, but I believe he does.
This is a picture of one of the Juveniles, they've been keeping the Great Tailed Grackles at bay and knocking out some of the prey birds numbers. Their has been an explosion in the dove population here so I'm not surprised they're around. The blizzard we had probably knocked out a lot of the raptors food sources outside of town so they've moved within the city. There is a family of Mississippi Kites not too far from our area, I counted at least 10 individuals.
People come and look and take their pictures, a lot of people love having them around and hope they stick around. The mocking birds, blue jays, and western king birds think other wise.
The juveniles are venturing farther from the nest and have been roosting on the telephone pole in our alley, so I get to see them every morning I walk out in the backyard to put Shadow out.
Been really awesome seeing these guys fly, i've had them almost hit me in the head when they flew out of their perch to get away from the mocking birds that harass them.
Sorry for the bad quality, I only have an iphone for taking pictures.

But they don't appear to have the red tail! X3
