Graham NEEDS to venture out on to that dangerous root to get the beet, because that is the only way he can get a beet, and he needs a beet to feed to a beet-craving pigeon** later which will not rescue Graham from yet one more enormous bird unless so aided first. There is no other beet in the world that Graham can get.

I wish I'd anthropomoped that bird a bit more; it looks like it's in shock with the one visible eye like that.
