This makes me wonder if the high definition graphics we have now have caused us to lose something along the way. Something older games have that newer games that take advantage of available technology will never have.

It's sort of like how textuality and radio have a certain charm over spelling out the pictures. Your imagination can fill in the details more to your liking.
