You know what might be kind of cool? If the characters referenced things that were going on at the time the comics took place. For example, in May of 1980, The Empire Strikes Back had come out, Pac-Man was introduced in Japan, and Mt. St. Helens erupted. IDK, maybe it would be difficult to work them in without seeming gratuitous, but it was just a thought.

Some key events will appear in the comic, presumably ones that affected the author in some way enough to influence the comic itself. Which ones? Wait and see, I suppose.

You also have to keep in mind that most cartoonists had comics in queue to run, so some effort would have to be made to poke a comic into the stream - it's highly unlikely that an event could be reacted to quicker than a day or two after even then, realistically...
