Hey look I actually got something done in a timely manner for once! People with hawk eyes probably noticed this fella show up a lot in my work as logos on objects or as a plushie.

Well a couple of years ago I did a test with a knock off munny. This alien was just intended to be completely random with no additional reason to exist. I can't actually remember for sure but it may have been Stront that said I should use the design in Entirety. Instead of making it an actual species I decided to do the very opposite: its a fictional species within the sci fi itself!

Basically as I've mentioned before the UICA is a big fucking organization, people of all species live within the headquarters, its essentially a small country floating in space. So yeah several decades ago they decided they needed to create a product line for the children of their various staff. Given it was unfair to make it any one actual species (because it would feel like favouritism) they came up with Umbert. Basically they made something cute and appealing to everyone but still far removed from every species so Umbert couldn't be assumed to be from any known life containing planet.

Eventually Captain Umbert kinda transcended from being just for kids to being more something for all ages (think Hello Kitty or Mickey Mouse) so his face can be found on a massive amount of products.

Captain Umbert doesn't really have much in the way of personal traits in order to make it possible for anyone to see themselves in them; they're basically listed as brave, kind, accepting and a friend to all. Umbert officially have 17 friends (one of each sapient species in the story, even Iyj are included!). Umbert isn't stated to have a gender or age and their home planet is listed as ???. Also as their title would suggest they command a ship though their mission is peaceful apparently.
I decided to add an image of both a Umbert Novelty shop and the alternate simplified version of Umbert sometimes used on products where the more detail heavy version wouldn't look as nice. I just wanted to make things as comprehensive as possible.

Also art wise it was fun to revisit this more cutesy style. If I wasn't such a foul mouthed jackass I could probably do illustrations for children's stuff lmao. So enjoy!
