Father by Genisay

Father

Genisay

This was a commission project I did for Essai (essai.deviantart.com) It was started during a month that I had no hours at work and when I was doing ten dollar sketches to try and bring in some extra money.

I knew he'd said he did not have much money at the time and would see about doing at least ten dollars, but then he decided to do a full out commission at thirty dollars instead. The money went fast sadly, but bless him for it.

This was a project I did three different sketches for and sent him what I had. Out of the three, we decided to take this one to finish.

To get ideas for the image, we chatted and he told me things about his character Andrei. As I learned bits and pieces of his background, the part about the hat belonging to his father really struck my creative muses. So two of the three sketches had something to do with that hat.

This was a project that I did not have the final version in my head for. It sort of put itself together as I went. First it was just the drawing, with static hair. But as I worked on the position and angle for that long piece on top of the head, it started to feel like there was supposed to be a breeze, so I resketched the hair and clothing to mirror that. Then the wind and blown particles came into the drawing, and that made me think of a cold autumn day turning to an autumn night, which brought in the play of light and dark.

As I continued to work, a line of text popped into my head, and based on what I know of the character's background and the imagery I already had, the text turned into a short poem and the light and dark theme continued to flow even into that.

I really hope you like this Essai. Andrei was a lot of fun to work with, and while I like the Andrei/Model E connection and relationship, I felt this one needed to be just about Andrei. This project was a lot of fun, and I might play with color a little more on the character and update it, but I wanted you to be able to see the final version along with everyone else.

Thank you so much again, my friend!
