Iraya's time learning how to scrap by while serving as one of her region's arcane troops opened up the pathway to learning different magics under stress. The crunch of being out of in the field required methods of learning that were a bit more unorthodox and potentially forbidden by civilian mages, but Iraya had no qualms with putting those methods to use during and after her service. Most frequently, and most effectively, the arcane dissection of books, scrolls, and even magic-prone beings can unlock raw energy and secrets that can be of good use to both the dragon and her higher-ups. Even now, long after her required service, Iraya still occasionally takes enjoyment out of obliterating some arcane source material to understand its secrets more intimately, or refuel her own mana reserves.
