Pony (critique answered)

fillyflight

Uploaded not because I like it particularity (well I did but then it was shot down from a group for multiple reasons including my use of colour theory which was what I was practicing in the first place X3 shows how bad I am at it lol ) but so I can get others thoughts about it.

One of the reasons it was shot down was anatomy - now I'm not going to fight that as looking back at it the back legs are horrendous and it sucks generally but they added a bit onto the end which I didn't understand (and didn't want to dispute because I'm pretty sure I'd have been kicked out of that group) they said it looked more like a goat o.o I don't see it though - does anybody mind going furthur into this, I was a bit confused - I'd just like to know what I'm doing wrong so next time I can make it less goaty X3

edit - looking at it I do see it a bit but then again it also looks close to a my little pony body type as well - still confuseds as to why that bit was added, I'd wouldn't have minded if it was just said the anatomy was wrong as they weren't doing an in depth critique of it anyway... I think it just made me even more confused |D - still a more indepth critique would be good for me

edit 2 - My mistake - I wasn't even looking at the head anatomy - I was just making a stupid assumption they meant the body and not the head - I shall keep what has been said in mind and make sure I don't do another goat again |D

When working on something as stylized as MLP ponies, it's very subtle differences that can make them look wrong/like a different animal and it's somewhat hard to explain what makes that difference, but I shall try anyway.

Now, let's look at pictures: Here a foal vs. a baby goat.

The foal's head is basically two circles, one for the base of the head and a smaller one for the muzzle. The slope between the forhead and muzzle goes in a soft curve. Also, not so apparent on this picture, but horses have rather small ears placed very high on their heads. Plus, they have big nostrils, placed far apart.
Meanwhile the goat's head is more like two squares. The slope between forhead and muzzle is very angular, and so is the muzzle itself. Goats also have pretty large ears placed low on their heads, and small nostrils that sit close together at the tip of the muzzle.

Some of these things are removed by the stylization - The MLP ponies have tiny nostrils for example, and their muzzles are more like half-circles, giving them a very large forhead. However, other things remain - The curves of their faces are very round and soft, and the ears are small, pointed and placed high.

As for your drawing, both the pony's head and muzzle are square in shape. The angle from forhead to muzzle is really sharp, and it looks even sharper because of the horn cutting off the part of the forhead where there should have been a curve. Apart from that, your pony's ears are set very low and they are a bit on the large side. Lastly the nostril is placed far to the front and seems to connect in a snout like nose like that of a goat.

Sorry if this is a bit long, but whenever you're having trouble making animals look like the animals they're supposed to be, I feel it helps a lot to look at pictures and compare.

Anyway, hope you can use this for something!
And for the record, I don't think your use of colour is so bad - You just need to work with reflected colours more, and keep the colours harmonious by mixing them up a little :)

Ah, thank you :) I think my problem of not seeing this was because I was assuming they meant the body and not the head - so I was looking in depth at references at the bodies of both animals but completely disregarding the head anatomy X3

Thanks so much for the information - I'll keep it in my mind for the next time I try MLP style again - I think I was going too far into my normal cat/wolf territory which I usually do which was probably a factor to why the muzzle was becoming more squarish/

Oh, yeah, I can see why that would confuse you since the body looks pretty unmistakably like a horse :P

Horses have a weird head shape compared to many other mammals - definitely very far from dogs and cats. I always had a hard time getting it right too.
