Inktober 2017 - Day 18

farorenightclaw

Day 18 of Thornwolf's Inktober prompts! Today is a manticore. I've known about these creatures as long as I can remember, but my strongest early memory of them was seeing one on the cover of Piers Anthony's A Spell For Chameleon (right here). I decided to give my guy that same head tuft thing as a small nod to that illustration. I feel like manticores' three rows of teeth are not shown off often enough, and lions are often photographed while yawning, so it seemed like a good combo. It turns out it's really hard to draw an even semi-realistic yawning face! I'm not totally happy with the result but it gets the point (get it! hah! all three rows of 'em!) across. I ended up referencing a picture of The Rock yelling so if the face looks familiar (I doubt it) that's why, haha. I also actually did some fucking research on what bat wings look like when they're folded (as opposed to wrapped around the body) and I have apparently been drawing that wrong for like.. my entire life. Didn't realize they curled under like that. I think it looks neat though! I also includes the venomous spines on the scorpion tail, which he can shoot at you. I like bonus features.

Art by me!
