Entirety Species: Aawra by FamiliarAlien

Entirety Species: Aawra

FamiliarAlien

I have 3 species still left I wanted to do before giving up on species for 2015 (I will finish up the bestiary sometime in 2016). So I needed one species for the planet Blaeta (accounted for now) one from Desergen and one from Igelin. I'll try to get the other two up soon!

So anyway aawra are one of those species which explains why Shlen are classified as a prey animal sapient species. While the female are pretty small the males are... well so big their shell is kinda going partially out of frame in the size comparison seen there. Before any unfortunate implications are created they reproduce by external means so the males just spray on the eggs the females have laid to fertilize them.
The reason for the size difference is a single male usually has a harem of dozens of females which he protects. Blaeta is one of those "everything wants you dead" kinda planets so the male needed to be able to fend off most anything. Because of this size difference the male requires way bigger prey and therefore often goes after the people species of its planet. Aawra rarely can crack through a shlen's shell even with their ice pick like lower bill and claws but they do manage sometimes and because of the ruckus they create doing this they may actually attract one of the species which CAN easily massacre shlen populations. Luckily as you would think given it has a harem males are much less common.

As far as behaviour goes for both males and females they're actually surprisingly chill predators, one reason is they're actually omnivorous so they actually spend a lot of time grazing on aquatic plant life rather than hunting. Most won't even attack if they're nervous as besides their claws they can fully squish themselves back into their shell to deal with conflict. Due to this they are in fact commonly kept in the aquariums of the UICA, notably only the females; weirdly its less because of the size and more to keep populations better in check as a single male can create hundreds of offspring in a single event. Modifying both the size and reproductive abilities of males is often consider unethical so they just return males to their home planet when they pop up.

As far as design goes... I don't even know this just just kinda came together after looking at goblin sharks. Figuring out exactly what I wanted the face to look like was an adventure to say the least, same with the palette which sent through several variants. This would have otherwise been done a day or two ago if not for those things x-x

So enjoy!
Entirety and all creatures related to it belong to me
