It also helps that this convention is a short 2 1/2 hours away! It also helped that I didn't have to be at a table all day.

This is pretty spot on. I don't identify as "a furry," or really have any excitement about furry things, but a bunch of my friends do and I'm attending Anthrocon because they're going to be there and I want to have fun with them. It's a fun atmosphere in a new place with lots of strangers and things to try. Same with Otakon, which is a lot closer to home. One convention I don't attend but observe on the fringes is Bronycon, which is having its third annual "Brony Bar Trot" this August, where bronies essentially conquer the Fells Point neighborhood of Baltimore. That's always a hell of a ride.

I suspect a lot of that talk is rooted in envy. I don't know how many times people told me as a kid I was "too loud" - it turned out I have a great radio and acting voice. Certain people will down-say, with surprising regularity and viciousness, any gift you have they do not. This will go with groups in spades, since it's even more impersonal in the vitriol.
