The mountain pygmy-possum is the only Australian mammal to be restricted to alpine habitats. They have prehensile tails and mainly feed on hibernating Bogong moths. The females live in family groups of up to 10 related individuals, while males range much further and live solitary lives. Because of this they are at great threat to road construction and infrastructure for the skiing industry, which is fragmenting their habitat and preventing males from migrating back to the female nesting sites. Predation from introduced feral cats and red foxes are also an issue, as well as climate change which is causing a trend for second litters, which unfortunately prevents the mother and litter from accumulating enough fat to survive the winter.
