The Cozumel or Pgymy Raccoon is only found on Cozumel Island. It is mainly a coastal species, which is unfortunate as the island is being developed for tourism, centralising around the beaches where they live. Habitat fragmentation is also a threat as the road system is expanded and widened, especially as their highest cause of mortality is collisions with cars. Invasive species, such as boa constrictors and feral dogs, as well as the introduction of the Northern Raccoon as pets are another issue they face. The biggest natural threat however, is hurricanes. They cause drastic population declines and direct injury, which is a concern when the population is already depressed from human activities, and with climate change increasing the frequency, magnitude and duration of hurricanes in the Caribbean Basin.
