TripVerse is a weird little nerd for spell books. He has little interest in magic and no interest in learning it or using it. He’s fascinated by spell books because spell writers have to write pages and pages of history, citations and documentation in order to manage their use and keep them predictable. So spell books are often a wealth of historical information of much interest to someone who studies that sort of thing.

Except spell writers do not share their books with just anyone. They are never mass produced, many are old and delicate, some contain trade secrets and spell writers are incredibly protective of spell results and don’t want anyone screwing up a spell because they didn’t know how to use it.

So Trip has to go and be weird at spell writers in person to try and convince them he’s not going to ruin or sell their spell books. Social skills (or lack there of) be damned!
