Influences by Derrick Fish

Influences

Derrick Fish

In this second new strip, I decided to show off some of my influences and inspirations for fun. Can you name all the artists I'm homaging here?

Beginning in 2001 online, Dandy & Company is the slightly skewed misadventures of a boy and his dog and the crazy situations they find themselves in.

Collections of material dating back to 1993 can be ordered for print or digital download at: http://www.indyplanet.com/front/brand/BigPondComics/

Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, Peanuts, Bloom County/outlands/opus, Walt Kelly's Pogo. I must admitted that Pogo is one of my favorite comics of the all time, however it took me long time to figure out it's actually based on pogo because of certain line work in some ways and what you were trying to reach for. But, it doesn't reminds me of pogo in some ways. However you did your best since Walt Kelly's brushstrokes can be very difficult for many artists to copy from him. It's my opinion and you don't have to take my word for it.

That panel took me longer than the entirety of the rest of the strip to draw. Walk Kelly's line work was just... perfect. On my best day, I knew I couldn't get that close to it, but it was a lot of fun to at least TRY.

One of the challenges in each panel was looking through archives and print collections to kind of Frankenstein together pieces and parts that each artist has drawn to give me an idea of how they might approach my designs.

In this instance, Kelly was also the hardest to find similar elements for. There weren't any humans in POGO, for instance, to give me a solid idea on how to interpret Bernard. Still, it was fun to try. Thanks

Walt Kelly did draw human beings in many of his non-pogo comic projects. He did draw one African American boy in very early version of the Pogo (I think it was in the comic books before comic strips), before he finally decided to not use the boy anymore. He likes it better when the swamp is filled with 100% funny animals instead. Because it's easier for him to deal with it. However the African American boy was drawn in kind of different but similar style. Like some kind of prototype style before he finally handcrafted his own best known trademark style for his Pogo comic strip run. Hope this info helps you out for your future use.
