studies studies studies studies...

I saw blindwatchman of FA do a chicken in his gallery for study. And then I saw redvernal of FAdo a few. And then today I was like, "Yeah, those two know what's up. I should re-add studies into my workflow. Maybe I'll pick an animal each week, or a material or a texture, and just commit an hour each day. Yeah! That will help me with form and texture, and speed, too. Maybe even more than speedpaints might."

Well, I said that, and then did a little study! Of this sucker. Maybe I'll group them up in the future, maybe I'll just upload individual ones that look nice as I do them. I don't know! But people have said before they like my studies, so, why not share 'em. And I thought it fitting to commit the first few to be chickens seeing as those two did wonderful chickens.

Critique more than welcome!

        You're most welcome! :)

(This is so fluffy you could probably mass produce adoptables and sell them! chuckle)

I've never been huge on the concept of adoptables, I can't lie. They always felt sort of... I dunno, lazy? Maybe not the right word. But I've always viewed it as a transaction that didn't have a lot of care between either party, for some reason. I don't think that sort of stuff is for me!

whew I'm glad I am not the only one who has thought that. :)

But if you ask any artist...all they'll tell you is they make the most money off of YCHs and adoptables, so that's why they do them. If I were to make adoptables...I wouldn't make cookie-cutter ones from a pre-made base, I'd create new things to sell each time. Seeing dozens of recolored versions of one picture sometimes makes me very, very sad.........

YCHs are another mixed bag for me. Some of the results can be pretty cool, especially if the artist gives a simple gesture drawing and is like, "Ooooh, what could this end up like?" and gives it their all. If the image is practically done and they're just looking for a color palette rather than a character, then I don't quite get the appeal. But hey, at least a ton of work goes into that still rather than just going off a base like some adoptables I've seen! So they get one thumbs up from me, almost two. Luckily, most of the time I see YCHs with care put into them -- I used to see a lot of lazy ones, and they still float around, but they seem to have gone the wayside. I don't know if I'd consider selling them. Maaaaaaybe? I don't think there's a lot of interest from my little following, but perhaps in the future.

If I were to do adoptables, I definitely think I'd take the same approach. I'd like each one to feel personal and has a thought put into it, maybe even offer a backstory or history to the character in the description that's optional for them to take with it. So, like, say I'm doing dragon adoptables. Change the head shape, change the anatomy, maybe make one on all-fours instead of anthro, maybe make one a ghost dragon (2 spooky), etc. Not "Green Dragon," "Blue Dragon", "Polka-Dot Dragon" from the same base. That just feels disingenuous to people, in my opinion.

Most YCH's I see lately are the nearly finished ones. Though when I started out on FA 3 years ago...most YCHs were often re-used by the artist, so I really didn't get the idea behind that. If you're auctioning off a character piece...it almost feels like slap to the winner when the artist used the same pose for another YCH a month later. But I hear you on the whole mixed bag feeling on YCHs. Some I think are really beautifully done (Anglish on FA does beautiful YCHs, but they are the nearly completed ones)...and some I think people just throw up a pose there for quick money making.

I think what made me feel worse about adoptables was when a LOT of people on FA were using a different artist's base to sell adoptables--all they were do was selling their "unique coloring". Many were using the popularly purchased "Waitress" base. Even people I knew as fairly decent artists were cranking out dozens of adoptables using this particular base...and to me it said all they cared about was money at that point--not doing the art anymore. :( When an artist no longer wants to draw their own unique art to sell...that really makes me sad.
