2008/9 - 2014 Improvement Review

Deriaz

I normally don't indulge in these things, but after some consideration, I did it for fun, just to see for myself if my own doubts were true. And, uh. Well... Okay, so I'll indulge this once. Just this year. I promise I won't do another one of these for a few years. I think the last time I did something like this was 2010. (I hope these are okay in the Weasyl guidelines. If they aren't, please let me know, and I will respect the rules and take it down!)

I think a loooot of the early stuff hasn't been seen by anyone, especially not after I cleaned out my dA account way back when and started "fresh". I used to only share it on some old forums called "Kongregate". I also did not start saving my images on my computer until December 08, but I had begun drawing around August of that year. Many of those items don't exist on paper, on my computer, or anywhere else, save my roommate's hard drive. Despite that, I tried to keep this as accurate as possible.

Feel free to ask any questions if I wasn't clear about something, or if you want more information. Thank you to those who have been along for this little journey, however big or small a role you've played.

Here's some music to go with it.

I really love how you described the years of your progression of art in this...not many people add that much detail in these things. And I love seeing the "art improvement memes" people post, to see their evolution in art and style.

You've really done amazing things and improved a lot of your techniques...even though you couldn't draw much while you were in school, it looks like what you learned in school really helped you a lot in your evolution. And I have to say...I really love your pencil and monochrome works a lot. Pictures like that really show off the basic techniques that you add to with colors later on.

Keep up the amazing work! cheers

It took me a bit to figure out exactly what to say. I wanted to try and keep the tone as neutral as possible, minus the bit about the critique I suppose. That still fuels me to this day. Oh gosh.

I think that's what I think I'm going to start 2015 with, is a little bit more focus on those values. They're in a nice spot now, but they're a little bit extreme at times. I gotta work on not forgetting my midtones so much.

Thank you very much. I'm happy to have you along; I enjoy seeing comments from you. They also fuel me and keep me going. <3 Thanks once more!

I always wanted to go to art school when I was growing up...but in a poor family, it was simply not something that would happen. Art is a pretty expensive profession and even as a hobby. But I have a great love of art...and love to see it--and see people who love doing it! I have a lot of artbooks of fantasy and manga artists...like I loved Naoko Takeuchi's watercolor paintings (she's gone digital with her art now, though...it is still very beautiful, but has a different charm than her paintings) and Michael Whelan does fabulous stuff with just acrylic paints!

I do love seeing your art a lot, because clearly it's something you love to do. You're not like many others who have the talent, but constantly complain about doing commission work...you put the love and effort into what you're doing--and you haven't regulated yourself to a specific range or medium in your art. You truly are trying to learn everything...you're not saying "all digital" or "all traditional" for your art, you're always working on doing both it seems. I think that is pretty awesome!

And you are most welcome! As long as you love your art and love working on it, it will always show through! :)
