Any day now, the war would begin. Everyone had been tense for days. Speedfoot and Brome, previously known as Hackberry, could feel the weight on their shoulders the strongest. Being Toadwax’s prized captains when they still resided in Efrafa’s walls, everyone in the warren looked to them for a game plan. They would know Toadwax’s brain and methods for war the best. The only issue being this would be Toadwax’s first war. They always practiced their formations and tactics, but had never used them in a real situation.
In their history, the two did feel an emotional connection with their leader before his mind became corrupted. To Speedfoot, Toadwax was his closest friend. To Brome, he was an inspiring father figure, and stayed that way until he found his real family that was still alive in Watership Down.

"It doesn’t feel right to fight him." Speedfoot commented with a huff.

"I know how it feels, but we’re the best chance this warren has against him. We both have families here that we need to protect. Our bonds with Toadwax don’t matter anymore." Brome answered.

"You didn’t see how he started. I helped him rise and take command. I assisted his plan in taking down Woundwort. All that’s happened up to now is partly my fault." Speedfoot replied with a sigh, as he turned his head to the light peering into the hollowed burrow where they sat. The side of his head facing the light was the torn side. The scars and ruined eye where his “close friend” demonstrated his rude life’s awakening. When Toadwax threatened not only his life, but the life of his mate and unborn kits.

"Toadwax deserves every bit of pain he gets. It’s only fitting that his "associate" end his life." Speedfoot said finally, as he could feel a low growl brewing in his throat.

Speedfoot is the son of Moss and Heather, and became a respected Captain of a rebuilt Efrafa. Afterwards he offered his services in Watership Down in needs of a safer environment for his family.
Brome was known as Hackberry in Efrafa, has he was kidnapped from Watership Down when he was a kit to serve the owsla of Efrafa. Upon returning to Watership Down, he discovers not only his real name, but that his parents are both Bigwig and Spartina.
