Wint grew up a member of his family's tribe, dividing his time between the traditional lifestyle on the island and a more modern life on the mainland. While his quirky and eccentric nature sometimes made it difficult to fit in on the mainland, he proved to be popular with the tribe, taking part in special ceremonies and becoming a little bit of a 'casanova' with the girls.

Leaving his tribe behind at age 18, he began to spend more time wandering countryside, scavenging and being self-sufficient, undergoing a philosophical and spiritual transformation along the way.
