Burn Down the Lighthouse by DavidN

Burn Down the Lighthouse

DavidN

Surprise! Here's a new song. After the whole Hatoful suite, the sound of the phrase "burn down the lighthouse" really stuck with me, enough to deserve a revisit. The lyrics, of course, have nothing to do with my real life whatsoever.

I apologize for the generic background (this is what passes for a dark song for me) - I now know exactly what the theme and title for the album after my next one will be, but I want to wait until it's nearly finished before I reveal it!

Lyrics

From the dark of the sea we rose
The struggle to save our souls
Escaping the turmoil
Regaining control
At the end of the storm we'd find
A promise, a shining light
A beacon to save us
From the everlasting night

But in time
The world changed
Before our eyes
And the haven decayed
Under falsehood and lies
Now it's time
To take the helm and rise again
And we'll follow the sun with no fear

Into the storm again
Into the brave new unknown
Once more we're riding together
And onward we go
We're heading out again
So follow me
We'll burn down the lighthouse
We'll be free forever
From all false dreams

Invaders in false disguise
Would offer to be our guides
They promised our safety
Then cast us aside
A future that never came
A false star to guide the way
They drove us to madness
One by one we fell away

So in time
The world changed
Beneath our feet
And the lighthouse was held
By corruption and greed
Now it's time
To take the helm and rise again
And we'll follow the sun with no fear

Into the storm again
Into the brave new unknown
Once more we're riding together
And onward we go
We're heading out again
So follow me
We'll burn down the lighthouse
We'll be free forever
From all false dreams

You've spent your life
Lost in the shadow of the lighthouse
You can't conceive
There is a world beyond the stone
Dragging us down into
The lies that you have gathered
If you can't offer us a future
We will make our own

The lighthouse will burn to the ground
The candle expires, the light fading out
And as the embers are dying
We'll leave all behind
Far from the ashes of the past
We'll see the new world rise

Come step outside with me
Out here there's so much more to be
We're out on our own
And as the sun appears
And as we go our separate ways
I hope some day we'll meet again

Burn down the lighthouse
Leave nothing behind
After all so long, I see it clear
There's no place for us here
So it's time to take the helm
And steer towards the distant sun
And we'll carve out our path with no fear

Into the storm again
Into the brave new unknown
Once more we're riding together
And onward we go
We're heading out again
So follow me
We'll burn down the lighthouse
We'll be free forever
From all their false dreams

Burn down the lighthouse
We'll take the falsehood down
The dreams of the king
Break down the walls and see
The smile of the sun
We're heading out to live again

Looking at your next album and now the one after, I can't help but recall a time you said you didn't want to be Kamelot....

But, you know, at the risk of invoking Your Approval Fills Me With Shame given what a biased source I obviously am, I really like this. :) I mean, not ... the things you had to go through for inspiration, of course; I'm truly sorry for those. It's a great song, though, and I like that you were able to pull something beautiful out of the mess. And it does have an optimistic tone to it, the sort of "we've been through a lot, but we're fed up and done now, time to burn down the lighthouse and find a better future" message sort of makes me think this could be an unintentional sequel to Navigator, which I also loved.

Heh, this is very much an intentional sequel to Navigator :) I actually considered prepending the title with "Navigator II:" but decided it was too pretentious even for someone like me.

I think mostly my songs are pretty neutral, being neither as depressive as Kamelot nor positive like Iron Savior (who recently seem to have changed their genre to "sci-fi/80s motivational music", a direction I am absolutely fine with). But with Navigator and this, I think that sometimes, I need to write message to myself, and this is the way to do it.
