This little black vulture is my half of a trade with my fellow vulture-lover, ScarabsCorner of dA: ! This guy sits at 6" tall and 6" from toe to tail, with a grand 15" wingspan. His wings are super light and more poseable than any I've made before, so I'm very proud of how he came out! I'm under quite a bit of stress currently, so making this guy was incredibly therapeutic.
For her half, she gave me one of her beautiful vulture art books~! I can't urge you enough- PLEASE go check out her wonderful book! A portion of the proceeds go to help vulture conservation efforts. Help out our favorite critters and get a beautiful book of artwork in the process~! http://scarabscorner.deviantart.com/
I'm currently not open for any more trades, but if anyone is interested in commissions like this guy, hit me up! I would absolutely love to make more mixed media dolls!!
kjdskjgslkfjlwe thank you!!!! <3 ;w; I really love doing mixed media stuff. It really adds that extra somethin'!
Oh, yeah! That's very true! I just had a thought... have you ever thought about using glass cabochons for eyes? Like these buggers right here: https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1053610841
You can paint the backs with acrylics, stick them in raw sculpey and bake them with no problems! And they're so sharp, too! I dunno, just tossing that out there. :3
Woah!! I hadn't thought of that! I was gifted some glass eyes a while ago but only had so many, so I've been super sparing about using them. These are so super affordable!! Holy smokes, Thank you so much!! I will totally grab a whole bunch of em. Your Arigo's eyes look so amazing and they add such a lifelike dimension to the eyes ;w; I would love have this option more readily available like this! Plus, that means they can be whatever color you want at any time? Sign me up!
For Arigo's eyes, I had used those glass amber ones that are typically used for floral arrangements, but they are NO WHERE near as clear and sharp as the ones I linked you to. I really wish I had discovered them sooner!! I was honestly debating about learning how to make glass eyes because I wanted something more clear and lifelike but I didn't because... well... I'm clumsy and me and fire don't mix lol.
OH and on this last batch of goat sprites I did, I mixed pearlising medium into my acrylics to give the eyes that extra sparkle and oh my GOSH it was awesome. And it didn't get messed up in the baking at all. I am going to put glitter in the acrylic next time to see what happens. I love sparkly things~~~
And one more thing, make sure the acrylics are nice and cured before sticking them into the raw clay. If they're not 100% dry, and you need to move your eyes, they're gonna smear or pull from the glass a little (bubbles suck).
I can't wait to see what you do! :D
I love the ones you used though!! They make it so you have to look a lil closer to see all the stars <3 and that is perfect! At least you have 'em for future projects though :D Hahaha I know your pain xD I have a little test kiln and my husband had been poking me to play with glass in it but aahh, I dunno man! Buying lil domes is going to be way more affordable haha.
Eee that's awesome!! I have to have a look-see!! I peeped over at 'em the last time I got to use my laptop and they're cute as heck, but I didn't get a real good look. I want to see em!!
Buhh thank you for all the tips! I'm so excited to play around with these!!
