I Believe I Can Fly

Da'alrakken

North Pass, Alaska

Just about 12 miles north of Juneau, North Pass is a small gap between Shelter Island and Lincoln Island. When the tides are right, the currents brings in fish that Humpabacks will feed on. Well, this juvenile Humback was having a bit of fun while Mom was close by nomming on that fish. The little one here is showing us some classic examples of what makes baleen whale. Those throat groves that allow their mouth and throat cavity expand. Those bumps along it's head are sometimes refered to as "Stovebolts" and they are actually hair follicles. A few barnicles can also be seen near those trhoat groves. This pic also allows you to see the Whale's eye. So the question is who is watching whom on a Whale watching trip?
