The one of the first Ultra monsters in the history of the franchise together with its prey Litra, a bird like monster who used her poison to kill Gomess in a heroic sacrifice. The two of them appeared in the first episode of Ultraman's predecessor Ultra Q.

Gomess is known to have been made by modifying a Godzilla suit, the one from Godzilla vs Mothra to be exact.
Tsubaraya Productions were allowed to do that since they were formed by several special effects artist who worked for Toho.
They made their own studio because they wanted to prove that you can make monster shows with the same quality of the movies at the time, and considering where things went so can we say that they were successful.

Gomess like most monsters from Ultra Q are small compared to other monsters being only 10 meters tall.
So when they brought him back in modern day so did they make him 40 meters tall and call him Gomess [S] to differentiate him from the original.

He may be one of the first to ever appear, but he's fully capable of being a challenge to Ultramen and their allies.
