AHL MAX Defunct Edition: Barry - Cape Breton Oilers

Last pic of the decade!

Of the five teams I've chosen for the Defunct Edition, the one team without an official mascot is the Cape Breton Oilers. The reason for choosing this team is that because there were no records found of this team having an official mascot, and I had to choose at least one team without one as a way of presenting my own idea on what the team's mascot could be.

The Cape Breton Oilers played in Sydney, Nova Scotia from 1988 to 1996. Prior to that, they were in Halifax from 1984 - 1988 as the Nova Scotia Oilers. While in Sydney, the team won the Calder Cup in 1993. From 1987 to 1994, the league's current CEO & President, Dave Andrews worked as the Director of AHL Operations for their NHL affiliate in Edmonton.

Barry is a beaver who's an oil worker. Along with his jersey and shorts, he wears worker gear such as a hard hat, rubber gloves, and rubber boots. The prop that he's holding is a hybrid of a hockey stick and a wrench. A beaver was chosen because they're the national animal of Canada, and is an appropriate species for a blue collar character.

In the background is the flag of Nova Scotia, the team's home province. The blue X, however, is made up of two blue oil pipes crossing each other.

Because the team was also in Halifax at one point, I chose to have his jersey number the year the AHL Oilers began playing in the Province of Nova Scotia, 84. Hence why the flag of Nova Scotia is in it as well.
