Knuckles by Curry (critique requested)

Knuckles (critique requested)

Curry

I got together with a friend of mine last night and played around with my makeup. I've been wanting to try busted knuckles for a while, so this is what I came up with (also it seems I never actually use blood in my makeup, so I figured I should give it a shot for once).

Excellent work my first instinct was eww why? and then my second instinct was what did he do to get the pinky knuckle as ripped open as the main punching knuckles? ANd then finally. It's gotta be make up to have all the knuckles ripped open proportionately.

So my only suggestion is for the next go less tearing on the skin for the ring knuckle and the pinky simply because the first two knuckles are meant for taking a beating. So most of the damage translates to them (and maybe if you are a sloppy fighter to the secondary knuckles on those fingers as well for extra realism). Your fists are a bit different shaped then mine, I would likely burst my pinky knuckle before my ring but yours clearly protrudes more than your pinky so you can get away with tearing it a bit as well.

Over all if I hadn't taken the time to take a good look at it and it had of just been a moments glance it really sells itself as fresh damage that is to the general population very very believable.

Many thanks. Someone mentioned the proportion on another site, as well. I will probably go back and re-do it a bit later. It's really my own fault for not using any reference photos or thinking about how it would actually tear. That being said, I also wish I'd frayed the edges more.

Rather than necessarily needing ref photos, you could always 'play punch' a wall, to see where contact is made. Agreed on the fraying. XD If you'd scabbed it over instead of the fresh in between, the smooth works really well for mid healing. VERY nice work overall regardless.

Haha, funny you should say that - after reading the proportion comments, I went to punch my textbook to see. Based on the layout of my knuckles and the way I punch, it seems like the 2nd knuckle would be shredded to sh**, followed closely by the 1st & 3rd. Definitely something to keep in mind for next time.
And yep, texture is something I've been trying to work on lately (clearly not in this case, but it will be incorporated in the next one I do).

A sometimes costly learning experience, but an experience none the less! And ultimately taking into consideration angle, what they're punching (give/solid), etc. It's a multitude of possibilities! But like Chinona said, the average person isn't going to question even what you just did. XD

-nods- And experience is good (and so are endless possibilities! Whee!)
And that's true -points to the other comments- :3

Oh my gosh I am so glad this is fake. I really had to stare at it after you mentioned it was make up to really convince myself. Amazing job! I am so glad my D8 face wasn't about an actual injury.

Good Lord! You totally had me convinced that you'd been punching through brick walls or something. XD
This is stunning... if not a bit intense! ;)

Not going to reply the same "thanks" to everyone, but to those of you who commented, thank you SO much! It really means a lot!

They seem a bit off to me. They look amazingly great! However, I do feel that they're larger than they should be, at that size my first thought was "why did he cut his knuckles open? is this a photo manipulation?" If you're going for busted knuckles after punching a brick wall or something, they way they look when flat should be how they look when fisted.. and when flat they should be closer together.. (i've actually busted a knuckle or two punching the side of a trailer once).. leave the pinky undamaged or mildly scraped and the middle finger should be most damaged while the first and ring finger should be less than middle but more than pinky (and same proportion, just not pattern). Very realistic looking though in appearance, just not shape/proportion.

Righto, thanks very much for the feedback!
