Mateo is the son of Alex and Ani, which makes him half-vampire. He and his half-older brother are the only mongrels that exist in the whole world mostly because Alexander is the only vampire who can actually have children.

However being a mongrel is more a disadvantage than an advantage. They have a special scent about them that lures and entices other monsters. They can eat normal food but unless they feed on blood in a regular basis they are not even stronger than an average human. Their possition is a very dangerous one.

That's the reason why Alex placed Mateo under the constant supervision of Elssoe (a true wolf-demon) and gave him Soeste (the familiar demon-bat) as a companion. That way Mateo will never be alone.
