For my Maya introductory class i made this helmet as a final project. It's kind of old though and i have made a newer better one, just never got around to uploading it.

For the background, I'm assuming it's rendered on a plane with a surface shader with occlusion. What I'd suggest doing to make showing props off easier is taking a plane and adding a deformer to it so you can turn it into a curve and hide the background. Alternatively, you can also change your render settings to make the background white so there isn't such a harsh contrast.
Looks pretty good though for something from an introductory course! Looking forward to seeing future works. c:
