Self by Crossed-Unversed

The truest nature of Self is that it can and will die,
evolve or stay the same,
left behind to wither away in the adapting world.
Self can fade.
It can be smothered by its surroundings.
It can be forgotten as others override it.
Self starts from nothing.
No memories, thoughts,
no emotions or ideas.
Self is developed
from love and lovers lost,
sadness and scraped knees,
bloody noses and broken bones,
friendships made and fears overcome.
Self evolves through
challenge and compromise,
struggle and sacrifice,
defeat and desperation,
tribulation and triumph.
Self will be crushed,
Self will be subdued,
Self will be questioned,
and Self will be confused.
Self will change and Self will fade,
Self will be ignored,
and Self will be replaced.
Self will never leave a soul
though the soul may forget Self.
A life may be torn apart
and sometimes so can Self.
Fight to keep your Self intact,
though others seek Self's change.
Self is who we really are.
Self is who we'll be.
So take a look and cease to judge
the Self you find in me.

Self

Crossed-Unversed

The first poem I had written since... one I wrote for my great grandmother's funeral in November 2012.

I... don't know where it came from.
