A Bunch of Types of Foxes (critique requested)

Coonotafoofox

When I hear the word fox I think of some of these guys! Well first the classic red, then meh kitsune, then arctic.

Side note, I wish I did a better job on this! That Culpeo Fox Is so ugly! And NONE of them are really good just...okay.

Also for those who don't know what a Tibetan Fox is... look it up! They're really THAT disfigured looking!

I'd have to comment on the classification of kitsune as a specie, when really kitsune is just Japanese for fox.
In short, pretty much all animals, to Japan, have the potential of becoming a monster or gain magical powers.

Well fokkusu is Japanese for fox, Kitsune is "spirit fox," and yeah, I know it's not a type of fox, I just wanted to add her in!

you can...can...type both...in any translator...and get the same thing...one is traditional Japanese and the other is the equivalent of Tex-Mex.
In fact, Japan is known for having several words that mean the same thing. Tanuki, Mujina and about 3 other words are interchangeable for all of the animals that they are modernly corresponding to.

A comparable example is would be the word for LION. The tradition word is Shishi and said Japanese "tex-mex" would be Raion.

Yeah I already Semi-knew that. Tex-Mex eh? I usually call it Spanglish!
So Tanuki, Mujina and about 3 other words are like Animal, beast, organism, etc.

The Kitsune would not the only problem with this! The Silver fox is nothing more than a, most likely, without looking it up, mutated, discolored red fox. I know they are a form of Discolored Red Fox. Which is also why I didn't throw in the Cross-Fox in there. Not only that, but 14 entire species would be missing! All said, I didn't draw this for a Fox Species Table. I drew the foxes that came to mind, at that moment. And MY Kitsune Character came to mind! The Labeling thing came later in the piece.

Earlier you said all animals can become "a monster or gain magical powers." I'm not sure that is 100% true I know A good amount of knowledge about Kitsunes such as types or classifications. But I've never heard of any other animals becoming powerful spirits.

The kamaitachi is the Scythe Weasel
The okami is the wolf spirit
The inugami is the dog spirit
The bakeneko is the monster cat
The onikuma is the demon bear
ALL SEVEN NARUTO whatever seal things...are some of the most known...and the reason they were used...
              Hebi, the snake
tsuchigumo, the spider (which is also featured as ONIGUMO in Inuyasha...inuyasha also being a dog demon)
Tengu of PRETTY MUCH ANY BIRD

              The list goes ON.

Oh Gawd How Could I Forget Okami!
I'm, odd if you knew me, not familiar with Naruto!
                But hey nice to know!
I guess Kitsune is the most known. Known enough to to get a nine day HOLIDAY In japan!

                • Link

I'm not entirely educated on that, but anything having to do with kitsunes and the number nine...isn't entirely true...
If you look up any the original Japanese stories, none of them outright mention any of the animals having any specific number of tails, or any of the tails having to do with ranking or power. Just that most obakemono...well, have more than one tail.
The whole, kitsunes having nine tails and being more powerful comes from a story of a single fearsome kitsune that just happened to have nine tails.
In fact, most of that stuff really comes from it being popularized by the author Mercedes Lackey. Much like Bram Stoker popularized the blood sucking wampyre by mixing several popular traits into Dracula.
Funnily enough. It was the popular RPG Pathfinder that used those traits for the Kitsune race and helped to further popularize the creature.

Today's kitsune lore is like...Twilight's vampires to Bram Stoker's.

Well the Holiday is The Nine days of kitsune!
Yeah some of the stories I've read had the multiple tails in them and some not, but that doesn't mean they are not there! Generally it's said you get an extra tail for learning to transform human like. And another for gaining a power. There has been old art with kitsunes with multiple tails. And old stories with kitsunes with multiple tails and magical balls. I don't know If I'd go as far as comparing it to today's vampire obsession though!
