Sylvannah wears what is called "fitted armor", which means it is forged and molded specifically to fit her figure. Other people would have a hard time wearing it unless they had a body that was similar in size and shape to her's. This offers several advantages and disadvantages over more utility plate mails that anyone can wear.

For starters, fitted armor tends to be a lot lighter, making it easier to move around in and providing a greater range of motion. The tradeoff to this is that it is not as effective at protection as plate mail is, being thinner and offering more openings. Since Sylvannah uses fighting techniques that call for speed and fluidity of motion she can mitigate this tradeoff with her skills. Because it is designed to fit just one person, these armors tend to be more ornately decorated with etchings and filigree, which also makes sense because typically only nobles can afford to have custom armors made.

Because of her situation, Syl sees more combat than most nobles do, so she has since learned how to maintain her own armor. Repairs are the extent of her blacksmithing knowledge though.

I got this sketch done for me by a random artist I found on the last day of FWA 2014. She was quick and efficient and apparently not on FurAffinity. I was unable to find her again until just now when I searched for Puddin'Pop on Weasyl. She's now known as WinterWeasel apparently!
