A shot of the same place as 'Geared Moon'. The gears in that shot can be seen here in upper center-left. Whatever this place was (mill, or a chemical ore stripping, possibly), the whole thing was belt-driven.
Belt-driven means that there was one power source - a steam, gas/diesel, or electric motor (probably all three, being upgraded as time went on..) that had a pulley, which wound leather belts. These belts would be connected to other pulleys, which would then make things happen. Spin a saw blade. Pump water up from a well, and so on.
In the image center is a pulley, which had a belt running down out of frame. On it's axle there, on either side of the pulley, are two 'shifters' - these changed the rotational movement to a linear movement, causing those shafts to push in and out as the axle turned.
I'm not really happy with the image, as processing is far too heavy. I may revisit this one in a year or so, and start over.
..Yup, not only do I photograph, I disassemble things and figure out how they work. :D
