I’m trying to get to know the characters for my new story, and it’s proving more difficult than I remember it being. I’m toying with different concepts for Shel; Vanessa has a pretty well-established personality, but I’m not happy with her character design. I want her to be a “plain, average” type (because that’s the kind that always get swept away in romances with men of mysterious power, yes?), but with the glasses and dark hair… I find she either looks like Erin (the leading lady in my last story) or my sister. >_<;;; I need to do some brain storming on these two. I want the final piece in Nomad to really reflect the changing I’ve done in the last 15 years, you know?

Thanks for the encouragement. I worked on Vanessa concepts last night and tried 11 FACES that didn't work... Didn't Thomas Edison say something like "I haven't failed, I've simply found 1000 ways that don't work"...?

It could take time. You and I spent a year back and forth with the initial character designs for "Res Mira". :)
Maybe you should do some people-watching if you can...see what you think of as "plain" for clothes, hair and the sort...and maybe something will click for you? :)

Maybe you could forego the glasses, since it's the stereotype of plain? You could do some other traditional plain Jane stuff, like long straight hair and a hair band. The dress shirt/skirt/slacks thing, too. :)
I think the designs are coming along nicely, despite the difficulty! :D
