And in the spirit of Shark Week..
The common thresher is among the 48 species of sharks that have been labeled as Vulnerable by the IUCN. This includes some of the most iconic and charismatic sharks in the ocean like the great white and whale shark. They're commonly the target of sports fishermen and are often caught as bycatch in commercial fishing nets.

Of course we can't have Shark Week without sharks, and it's no secret that sharks across the glob are in dire trouble. So I'm shamelessly using this piece to urge you to go and learn what you can do to help protect them.
