if dragons were real by Cassander

if dragons were real

if dragons were real

it's a funny feeling

when you say, "if dragons were real..."

and then go on and on

as if you cannot see me

or don't know that i'm here.

and then i remember

that you can't

and you don't,

and it's hard to really explain it, I guess,

what seems so obvious to me.

what is it like, I wonder,

to look at your true self

and see a human face looking back?

with four limbs, right where they're supposed to be,

and nothing out of place.

what is it like to feel

as if you truly belong in your own skin

with human thoughts and human desires,

and to see the world

through perfect human eyes?

i don't know.

and i guess that's how you feel

when you hear me go on and on

about the touch of the wind on my wings

and the fire burning within my heart.

if dragons were real

Cassander

August 2011.

The world can look like a very different place when viewed through a different set of eyes.

This poem has also been popular with otherkin and therians. It was inspired by a conversation on a Livestream, actually, talking to some people who liked dragons but weren't familiar with otherkin and saying how much they wished dragons actually existed. I'm happy with the way I tried to explain the experience of being otherkin in this poem by describing the experience of a "normal" person through our eyes. One of my favorite lines I've ever written remains "with four limbs, right where they're supposed to be".

I love this poem! :) Being therian myself, but another species, it is still very easy to relate, and I love the feeling that this poem creates! <3

      Thank you.

What's it like to be a bovine?

        You are most welcome!

And that is a question that it is not easy to give a short answer to. It took a number of years before I was able to accept it to myself, but for the past 15 years, I have been happy to be the one I am. The way it affects me the most in my everyday life, is that I never feel fully complete unless I have a bovine herd at home, where I have become integrated into the herd. Nothing else can give me the sense of completeness that I feel when I am interacting with RL cattle, on their terms.

As I now were forced to sell my farm half a year ago, it means that my primary goal in life, is to buy a farm that I can keep for the rest of my life, and where I can have a herd of my own to take care of, and be part of.

Interesting. I've definitely heard that cows are very social creatures, so I wish you luck attaining your goal.

I take it you kept cattle as pets, basically? Are you vegan? Forgive me if these questions are prying or inappropriate.

Thank you! And no worries, I do not mind any questions. :) Yes, though since it was never certain that I'd be able to keep my farm in the long run, I never dared getting my own herd, to later be forced to sell the herd. It'd be like selling your own family. So, I only ever took care of other people's cattle, in my pastures. If I had been comfortable with selling cattle, I could have had my own herd 11 years ago.

When I accepted that I was a bovine, I stopped eating meat from mammals. I've tried becoming fully vegan, but I have a number of medical issues with my digestive system, as well with my body's nutritional uptake, so my doctors and my dietitian, has forced me to at least eat eggs and seafood. Aside from egg and seafood, I don't consume anything from the animal kingdom.

Cattle to me, are companion animals, very much like dogs are. I would never use a cow or a bull for any kind of production.

Cool. That's interesting to read. I'm a vegetarian myself, but I do eat dairy and foods made with eggs.

That is interesting, several of the dragons I know are vegetarians. :)

Most of the ones I know tend to be big meat eaters. Can think of one vegan dragon off the to of my head, but that's about it.

Beautiful. I second the emotion. You're not the only dragonkin around.
