Charizard v2: WIP Mask Sculpt by CanineHybrid

Charizard v2: WIP Mask Sculpt

CanineHybrid

The result from yesterday's 10 hour Livestream, the clay sculpt of a Charizard mask!

Since the costume is going to have a moving jaw, I've decided that having a mechanical hinge is much more reliable than a balaclava/elastic one. Unless that person is sitting in front of me, it is VERY hard to determine how to go about adjusting the elastic tension so it performs properly. Not to mention that elastic wears out over time and stretches; it's really not ideal for many people's face types either. That's one of the biggest factors in putting it off so long, I wasn't confident I could make it work properly.

So from now on, if you want a moving jaw mask from me, it will be resin-based. It's also size adjustable because you can pad the inside with foam to fit your face better... but this is my very first time doing this so fingers crossed it will work out.

There are still a few things to touch up, such as the eyes need to be covered in clay so they'll release in the silicone, and the nostrils look funky. Bottom cheeks could use some bulking up too. Then I'll need to make the hinge itself and make the slots where it will attach to the cheeks. Trouble is I only have a 1"x1" square of clay left and still need to make a retaining edge around the mask. Sooo I might be buying more clay (or stealing some from Ani if she still has it from our special makeup effects and prosthetics class, har har) before I can get further. I've got tons of silicone luckily but I also need me some gypsum. And some resin. Time to make a trip to Reynolds!

This mask will be cast in resin and several details in the final version will be made out of foam like normal such as the horns, cheeks, eyebrows, and back of the head. By the way, the clay I used is called plasteline and is specially made for use with casting. It's the bomb.

Mask is being made as a partial suit for raver-neonlight
