Being stuck in a 60 km stretch of an Exclusion Zone has its ups and its downs. The Zone of Alienation was set up by the Ukrainian Government following the Chernobyl NPP meltdown in 1986. Since then, it has seemed that everyone who could get the hands on a gun and had a death-wish flocked the area in hopes of getting rich quick with the formation of powerful objects called 'Artifacts'. These items are created within things called Anomalies, which corrupt are lands that we use to call home. Once captured, Artifacts are sold at high prices depending on their function back to society outside the Zone. Effects can vary from rapid regeneration of human tissue or even internally directed gravitational field that allows the weightlessness of nearby common day items. When combined with everyday accessories such as jewelry it lets the rich and the privilege harness their powers with minimal risk. As more people flocked to the center of the Zone to search for such rare creations, the Military (Міністерство Внутрішніх Справ України) would address such aliens as 'Stalkers' with the following statement:
"We are here to protect you from the Zone, not the Zone from you. Do not jeopardize your life, do not try to penetrate through the secure area." -Major Kuznetsov
The only thing preventing Stalkers from exploring further into the Zone was the Brain Scorcher, a former Military installation that was seized by the Group (Группа) and became the first major application of mind control technology in the Zone. Once shut down by Strelok (Стрелок), word spread quickly and many Stalkers of different factions started to move to the center of the Zone under the presumptions that there is some fabled Wish-Granter, or a treasure trove of Artifacts, waiting there along with other things of Zone lore.
Many would find only death.
I myself chose to move inwards after the dissolution of my faction, the Renegades (Ренегаты). Despite it being a loosely held group we had big allies. Bandits always treated us with respect as we abide by the same creed. With a large concentration of them moving to the center to make money by selling Artifacts or to trade in weapons it was my only chance to be part of something larger again. As for anyone who would dare challenge such an incentive such as mine, will most likely end up dead in a Vortex Anomaly, left to be decomposed into a Meat Chunk, and later sold for a few rubles at the Skadovsk to Beard (Борода).
